Finger Lakes Community Dentistry Program

Finger Lakes Community Dentistry Program

For more information about CDP, please call 585-243-7847.

The primary focus of the school-based Community Dentistry Program (CDP) is to provide quality, affordable, and accessible dental services to the underserved and uninsured children, especially those in rural non-fluoridated communities who might not otherwise receive care.

CDP provides free dental screenings and dental health/nutrition education to students in nearly 90 schools and Head Starts across the Finger Lakes region, as well as a toothbrush, floss, and homecare instructions at no cost to the family. Parents/Guardians of children enrolled at participating schools may also sign up their child/children for preventive dental services that include X-rays, teeth cleaning, fluoride varnish treatment, and/or dental sealants.

What’s more, RPCN provides CDP participants with Care Navigation, assisting patients and families in search of a dental home, and facilitating insurance enrollment and/or sliding fee scale application.

The Community Dentistry Program has been caring for children since 1995 and currently provides school-based dental services at sites in Ontario, Wayne, Yates, Schuyler, Steuben, Livingston, Allegany, Chemung, and Oneida Counties.

Prenatal and Parent/Guardian Dental Health Education Programs

RPCN provides oral health and nutrition education to pregnant moms and parents. Families, through Head Start programs, are offered a yearly dental health presentation and are provided with brochures, toothbrushes, floss, toothpaste, and a fluoride rinse sample—all at no cost to the families. A list of area providers who accept Medicaid and Child Health Plus is also provided.

All children in Head Start programs who have been identified as high risk for decay may participate in the Fluoride Varnish Program and have the fluoride varnish applied up to three times a year with parental education and consent.

RPCN will be expanding this program to include Head Start programs in Utica in 2013.
